Calcutta Rescue
Images commissioned by Calcutta Rescue, a charity that operates since 1979 and serves the most socially and economically disadvantaged people of Calcutta and West Bengal region– regardless of gender, age, caste or religion. The images were taken in October/ November 2013 and document two of the charity's programs (Street Medicine and School n10), the amazing effort in bringing health care, prevention and education to the streets of Calcutta, as well as the overwhelmeling poor conditions of people's living. Although India is a rising power today, the harsh reality of poverty and deprivation is overwhelming distressful. In Calcutta and areas of rural West Bengal itself, almost 4 million people live below the poverty line and some 2.5 million people live on the streets and slums scattered across the city. Some of these images are taking part of this year's The PhotoPhilanthropy Activist Awards which identifies outstanding work done by photographers in collaboration with nonprofit organisations worldwide.
